Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
