Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved betting on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often play against one another. He was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
