Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
